Unterstand-Stollen

 

The coordinates of the concrete-reinforced entrance are approximate:  48°53'28.48"N 5°31'7.77"E

This is a second “Unterstand-Stollen” in the Lang-Graben, forming part of the Maasbogen-Stellung. The dugout comprises two entrances, of which the northern one, “Eingang A”, has been fully reinforced with concrete. It represents a textbook example of such a structure: two entrances connected by an elongated chamber in which the soldiers were accommodated. Inside, only remnants of wooden support beams remain visible, most of them decayed just above floor level.

The current status of this structure remains unclear. 

I live more than 300 km from Saint-Mihiel, so it is very difficult for me to simply travel there and back to check whether this structure has disappeared or not.

Out of respect for the bats, I took as few photographs as possible inside the dugout and avoided remaining there for extended periods, so as not to disturb the ambient temperature, to which bats are highly sensitive.
